Benefits of Aromatherapy

Ancient Legacy

Relaxing through your nose is one way of putting it. It may sound too simplistic to some but in essence that's the way aromatherapy works. Aromatherapy works by attaching physical, mental, and even emotional levels of concern.

You see the first element of aromatherapy is how the aroma or scents of the essential oils influence our brain. Through the olfactory nerves in our nose, the aroma travels up and to the limbic system of the brain. Basically, the aroma from the essential oils functions like a catalyst that makes the brain release certain chemicals that create a feeling of well being.

This goes to show how complex our sense of smell is. We have five senses, and there are times that we prefer not being able to smell rather than being blind or being deaf. But the truth of the matter is, having no sense of smell accounts to having the same disability as losing the other senses.

If our tongue influences the way we eat, our sense of smell is responsible for us enjoying that singular moment. Without our sense of smell, we cannot truly enjoy the sweetness of candies, the bitterness of chocolates, or even the sourness of home-made Italian pasta.

This goes without saying that our sense of smell is a vital key in aromatherapy. The aromas that we inhale from a blend of essential oils offer both psychological and physical benefits. It is believed that the natural chemicals in the essential oils can be absorbed through the aroma by the lungs and distributed throughout the body resulting to some physical benefits.

Essential oils can be used or applied on the skin as well. Although, this procedure can be quite unsafe when done improperly, the benefits of applying essential oils on ones skin is for physical benefit and can improve the physical health, appearance and even the constitution of an individual. The proper way of using essential oils for applications like massage and therapeutic baths is by the mixing it with carrier oils like sweet almond and apricot kernel oils.

Combined with different techniques of relaxation and treatments, like massages, shiatsu, acupressure, reflexology, or light therapy, aromatherapy becomes a powerful technique to achieve positive results from treatments.

Aromatherapy or relaxing through your nose is known to relieve stress related pains, depression, anxiety, insomnia, menstrual cramps, and even panic disorders.

Some of the more common scents are lavender, Chamomile, Eucalyptus, Rose, Jasmine and numerus other scents that we know and love.

Lavender- can be placed in and on pillows and said to help with nervousness and insomnia.

Chamomile- is said to have anti-depressant properties, and helps people who are suffering from stress and anxiety. It is said to help with PMS.

Eucalyptus- Is often used as a decogestant and when you are suffering from Upper respritory infections. Most vapor rubs contain it. I often would put a little on my sons pillows at night when they had colds and flu symptoms

Rose-- A very expensive essential oli by itself, but often can be found in numerous products. Long known as a aphrodisiac it is often used to accentuate romance. It is said to help open the heart. The next time you have a fight with that special someone, try putting a little on the sheets before going to sleep.

These are just a few of the scents that are out there. I find aromatherapy soothing and painless. I enjoy playing with the scents that can be placed anywhere and anytime. Try some on your sheets or in your bath you'll love it. Yoou can start by clicking on the links to get started today.
